How to Curl Your Hair Like a Pro

· Curl and set your hair so it last for days! ·

I'm a natural redhead.

But I’m not a natural color melted, multi-hued copper balayaged head (that’s a thing, I looked it up). I bit the bullet earlier this spring and covered my greys enhanced my natural color. My hairstylist at Salon 42 in Charlotte (Marissa H, check her out ya’ll) does an amazing job with my color, and in an effort to keep it looking as healthy as possible, for as long as possible, I’ve been trying to steer clear of heat. Or at least reduce how often I use it.

And that’s why I developed my curling routine. I really try to only curl my hair with heat once within my hair washing routine (which can last several weeks). I may touch some curls up here or there or slightly wave my hair in the middle of my routine. But otherwise, I try to stick with heatless hairstyles.

I filmed this video explaining all the steps that I take. When I do this process, I can sleep with my hair in a loose pony or bun, and the curls last for at least 3 days (sometimes more). You can always touch them up each day as well since you’ll still be using less heat. Don’t believe me? This is my hair the next day, just after taking it down. It hasn’t been brushed or curled in any way. I’m even still wearing my PJs 😉

Five Pro Tips:

  1. For these to really last, I recommend doing this routine on second-day hair. If you’re doing on fresh, smooth hair, spray a little dry shampoo throughout your hair, or just a texturizing spray. The curls will want to “slip” out of freshly washed, smooth hair. I outline this in my post about How to Use Dry Shampoo Like a Boss.
  2. Start with natural texture. I don’t recommend straightening hair and then trying to curl it. Your hair has wonderful memory. If you tell it one day to be straight, and the next to be curly, it’s gonna remember what you told it the first time. Don’t confuse your hair. However, if you’ve straightened your hair, or if it’s naturally stick straight, do what I did in the video, and sleep with your hair in a braid the night before you curl.
  3. Use a heat protectant. No lengthy explanation needed here. Just do it. The one I’m using in the video is an oil, you can use whatever you like. But seriously, the Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil is probably my favorite hair product right now.
  4. Pin the curls to your scalp. You can’t miss this step. You can, but your curls just won’t set and last the way you want them to. Drop the curls into your hand so they stay intact, and pin up through the curl, and onto your scalp. Can’t seem to catch those slippery little suckers? Just twist the curl back on your finger and then pin it.
  5. Use a light hold hairspray. Unless you want to look like you’re a contestant on Toddlers and Tiaras. You do you boo. My all time fav for light hold is Amika Touchable Hair Spray.

Also, in the video, I’m using my trusty 19 mm (3/4″) barrel from the Nume Lustrum Set. This set is amazing – it has five interchangeable wands and a glove. I personally like starting with the smaller wand, because the curls will naturally loosen up over each day, and eventually become a soft wave. If you want to start with more of a wave than a curl, use a larger wand than I did.

I love your tutorial video. I have VERY thin, fine hair and it takes like 2 seconds to curl with a wand but this is the basic technique that I use as well and it works great! And btw, you have gorgeous hair!

My hair is naturally super curly but I am so envious of these super cute curls. Have you ever used the curl rods?

This is awesome! It never occurred to me to pin the curls up and let them cool, but I bet it makes a huge difference! Thanks for the post!
