How to make the best Watermelon Margarita Recipe!

· The perfect summer drink with only 4 ingredients! ·

Summer is in full swing, and with the holiday weekend coming up, I wanted to share a quick and easy cocktail that’s perfect to sip by the pool, at a cookout, or hunkered down over a bowl of chips and salsa – no judgment here! Get ready to whip up a watermelon margarita and celebrate however you see fit!

This watermelon margarita recipe is totally customizable, you can make just 1 (I won’t tell) or a whole batch. Enjoy frozen or on the rocks.

While a traditional margarita is always a go-to, adding watermelon really ups the summer vibes. Alright, enough chatting, let’s make some watermelon margaritas!

First, you’re going to cut your watermelon into chunks. Like I said earlier, you can make just one, or a whole batch. You’ll need roughly 3/4 cup cubed watermelon for each watermelon margarita you plan to make.

If you want your watermelon margarita on the rocks, you have two options: 1.) You can just put all your ingredients into a blender and voila, you’re done OR 2.) You can puree the watermelon and strain it before adding it back to the blender with the rest of the ingredients. I tried this on the rocks using the first method but would probably strain it the next time if serving over ice. It’s totally up to you!

If you want your watermelon margarita frozen, which is what I’d recommend for the ultimate summer experience, place your watermelon chunks in the freezer on a baking sheet and freeze for at least a couple of hours or overnight. Then proceed to blend the ingredients together. You can use less tequila if you like, or even add agave or simple syrup if you like. If your watermelon is really ripe and sweet, you shouldn’t need it!

Whether you like your margarita on the rocks or frozen, you’ll still want to zest some lime and toss it with salt and sugar (or one or the other – remember, this is easy to customize to your tastes! Then run a lime wedge around the rim of your glasses and dip into the lime zest mixture to coat. Carefully pour in your watermelon margarita and garnish with lime and watermelon slices or wedges and get ready to drift into summer!

  • 3 cups chopped watermelon
  • 8 oz Tequila
  • 4 oz Lime juice
  • 4 oz Triple sec
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 2 tsp Sugar
  • Zest of one lime (lime reserved)
  • Agave or simple syrup to taste (optional)
  • Watermelon and lime slices for garnish (optional)

Directions (frozen):

  1. Place watermelon in the freezer on a sheet pan for at least 2 hours, or overnight.
  2. Combine watermelon, tequila, lime juice, and triple sec in a blender and blend until well combined.

Directions (on the rocks):

  1. Place watermelon in a blender and puree. Strain watermelon puree, then place back in the blender.
  2. Add tequila, lime juice, and triple sec to the blender and blend to incorporate all ingredients.
  3. Alternately, you may just combine the above ingredients, and skip straining the watermelon.

To finish your watermelon margaritas, combine lime zest, sugar, and salt in a shallow dish. Use reserved lime flesh, and press it around the rim of your serving glasses. Dip the rim in the lime mixture. Carefully pour your drink in the glasses and garnish with lime and watermelon slices, if desired. Enjoy!

*If you want to prepare just one drink, or scale the recipe to your liking, use 3/4 cup watermelon, 2 oz tequila, 1 oz lime, and 1 oz triple sec per drink.
